The material comes from the inner bark of the mulberry tree and is pounded till the fibers are soft and can be joined together by pounding to form a piece of cloth. Then the cloth is sun dried. Design colors are always the same - black, and brick red or burnt orange. Black paint comes from burned coconut husks. For the red paint, the leaves and bark of two trees locally known as saman and dun are boiled together. The longer the boiling process, the darker the red color that is obtained. Many times the red paint is applied hot. This piece of Tapa cloth, 48 inches long and 27 inches wide, is made from four pieces of tapa. The red or burnt orange color is more dominate that the black. The design is the artist’s choice.
